BS3621 Anti-Snap Locks Norfolk — Insurance Approved
BS3621 is the British Standard your home insurer almost certainly wants on your final-exit timber door. SS 312 Sold Secure Diamond and TS007 3-star are the equivalent standards for Euro cylinders on uPVC and composite doors. AC Locksmiths Norfolk fits insurance-grade locks across the whole county — Norwich, Cromer, Sheringham, North Walsham, Aylsham, Fakenham, King’s Lynn, Hunstanton, Great Yarmouth and every village in between. Same day, no call-out charge, written receipt listing the make, model and standard so you have a clear paper trail for your insurer.
Alan is DBS-checked, NCFE Level 3 qualified and fully insured. He will read your policy schedule with you on the doorstep if you want, and fit a lock that satisfies it word-for-word.
What is BS3621 — in plain English
BS3621 is the British Standard for thief-resistant locks designed for final-exit timber doors. To meet BS3621, a 5-lever mortice deadlock has to resist a defined level of attack: drilling, picking, screwing and forced entry. You can identify it by the Kitemark — a small heart-shaped symbol with “BS3621” stamped on the lock faceplate. Almost every UK home insurer treats BS3621 as the minimum acceptable standard for a final-exit timber door. Without it, an insurer can refuse a claim where forced entry was through that door.
BS8621 — the flat / HMO variant
BS8621 is essentially the same standard but with one change: the lock must always be openable from inside without a key, so you can escape in a fire. BS8621 is what you want on flats, HMOs and student lets where fire-escape rules apply.
TS 007 — the Euro cylinder standard
TS 007 is a kitemark scheme for Euro cylinders (the keyhole part on uPVC and composite doors), rated 1, 2 or 3 stars. The maths is simple:
- 3-star cylinder on its own — meets the standard
- 1-star cylinder + 2-star security handles — also meets the standard (the handles do the upper rating)
- 2-star cylinder + 1-star handles — also meets the standard, less common
A 3-star cylinder resists snapping, drilling, picking and bumping. The most common UK forced entry on uPVC is lock-snapping, which a 3-star cylinder is specifically designed to defeat.
SS 312 Sold Secure Diamond — the gold standard
Sold Secure is the testing house run by the Master Locksmiths Association, with police backing. Their Diamond rating (SS 312) is the highest residential rating available. A Sold Secure Diamond cylinder will resist snapping, picking, drilling, bumping and most known forced-entry methods. Brisant Ultion, Avocet ABS Quantum and Mul-T-Lock MTL5+ are common examples we fit. Every major UK insurer accepts SS 312 Sold Secure Diamond.
What “anti-snap” actually means
Anti-snap cylinders have a sacrificial front section. If a burglar tries to snap the cylinder, the sacrificial section breaks cleanly, leaving the locking mechanism intact and the door still secure. Without anti-snap, the cylinder snaps and the rest can be turned with pliers — the door is open in under a minute. Lock-snapping is the most common forced entry method on UK uPVC doors and an anti-snap cylinder is the single most cost-effective security upgrade you can make.
Other attack-resistance features explained
- Anti-pick — extra pins, sidebars or magnetic elements that defeat lock-picking attempts
- Anti-bump — pin shapes and spring tensions designed to resist bump-key attacks
- Anti-drill — hardened steel inserts that blunt or break drill bits aimed at the cylinder
- Anti-snap — sacrificial section that breaks cleanly under snap attack
- Restricted key blanks — keys can only be cut by authorised locksmiths with proof of ownership
How to check if your current lock has BS3621
- Open the door and look at the lock faceplate (the metal strip on the edge of the door where the bolt comes out)
- Look for a small Kitemark — heart-shaped symbol — usually with “BS3621” stamped next to it
- If you cannot see one, the lock is probably not BS3621 — it may still be a good lock, but it does not formally meet the standard
- For uPVC and composite doors, look for the stars stamped on the cylinder body — “3 STAR” or the Sold Secure Diamond logo means you are sorted
If you are not sure, send us a clear photo of the lock edge and we can usually tell you within a few minutes.
What UK home insurers typically ask for
Every policy is slightly different and the paperwork wins, but as a general guide most major UK insurers (Aviva, AXA, Direct Line, Admiral, Hastings, LV=, NFU Mutual, Saga) will accept:
- Timber final-exit door: BS3621 5-lever mortice deadlock, Kitemarked
- uPVC / composite final-exit door: TS007 3-star cylinder OR 1-star cylinder plus 2-star handles OR SS 312 Sold Secure Diamond cylinder
- Sometimes also: window locks on accessible windows (ground floor and easy-access first floor)
The receipt we leave shows the make, model and standard of every lock fitted — for renewal, a claim, or a re-mortgage survey.

Timing
- Anti-snap cylinder swap on uPVC / composite — 15 to a fast local response
- BS3621 mortice retrofit on timber door — 60 to 90 minutes
- BS3621 like-for-like swap on timber door — 30 to 60 minutes
- Front + back insurance upgrade — 1.5 to 3 hours
When you should not DIY a BS3621 fit
- Mortice depth — too deep splits the door rail; too shallow loses the British Standard rating
- Keep alignment — a mis-aligned keep means the door does not lock properly and the standard is meaningless
- Cylinder length — a 3-star cylinder protruding past the handle loses its anti-snap rating and is actually easier to attack
- Multipoint compatibility — not every cylinder fits every multipoint strip
Insurance-receipt paperwork
For every BS3621, TS007 or SS 312 install we leave a written receipt showing:
- Make and model of the lock or cylinder
- British Standard / TS007 star rating / Sold Secure rating
- Door it was fitted to (e.g. “front timber door”, “rear composite door”)
- Date of work
- Locksmith name and qualification
Keep this with your policy schedule. It is what an insurer wants if you ever need to claim, and it is what a re-mortgage survey or a home report wants to see.
Common mistakes we see — and what they cost
- Buying a Sold Secure Diamond cylinder online without sizing it correctly. Too long and it protrudes past the handle (easier to snap); too short and it does not engage properly.
- Upgrading the front door and forgetting the back. Insurers can refuse a claim where entry was via the back door if that door did not meet the standard.
- Assuming all 5-lever mortices are BS3621. They are not. Only the Kitemark guarantees the standard.
- Hiding the receipt and the renewal paperwork in different places. Keep them together. If the worst happens, you want everything to hand.

BS3621 and insurance-grade lock FAQs
How do I know if my current lock is BS3621?
Look at the lock faceplate on the edge of the door — there should be a small Kitemark and the text “BS3621”. If you cannot see it, the lock probably does not meet the standard. Send us a photo and we will tell you.
What is the difference between BS3621 and BS8621?
BS8621 is the same level of thief resistance but always openable from the inside without a key — required for fire escape on flats and HMOs.
Will SS 312 Sold Secure Diamond satisfy my insurer?
Yes. Sold Secure Diamond is the highest residential rating and every major UK home insurer accepts it on uPVC and composite doors.
Can you fit BS3621 on a uPVC door?
No — BS3621 is for timber doors with mortice locks. On uPVC and composite you need a TS007 3-star or SS 312 Sold Secure Diamond Euro cylinder, which is the equivalent insurer-accepted standard.
Is a 3-star cylinder really better than a 1-star plus security handles?
Both meet the standard. A 3-star cylinder is the cleaner solution if your handles are fine; the combination route is useful when you want to retain a particular handle design or do part of the upgrade now and the rest later.
Do you supply a receipt for my insurer?
Yes — every install. The receipt lists the make, model, standard and door, so it is ready for a claim or a renewal.
Is there a call-out charge?
No. There is no call-out charge anywhere in Norfolk.
